Silent Auction

We had a silent auction at the Ice Cream Social this year.  There were about 20 donations from center patrons and we brought in $400 is bids.  This has allowed the R.A.C. to get a new camera, SD card, and case.

No longer will we miss great candid shots while Darrell is taking bus trips.  No longer will we miss getting that embarrassing shot of Mary and Althea going crazy in the kitchen.  No longer will the domino players, line dancers, and tai chiers be able to avoid my wrath!!!  We have a camera!!!

Thanks to everyone who donated and/or bid on the silent auction.  Thanks to you, next year's photo display will be even better.

Ice Cream Social a Smashing Success

The Ice Cream Social that took place last Thursday was a huge success.  Around 300 seniors came out of the woodwork to see what the R.A.C. had to offer and they didn't go away disapointed.  (Not that anyone would complain about an evening that started off with free ice cream sundaes.)

G3, a band formerly referred to as the Gospel Guitar Guys, played for us again this year.  Their mixture of two stepping country tunes and old time rock 'n' roll is just what was needed to set a mood of fun for the event.

Terry O'Niell, long time entertainer and singer, emceed the event and kept the program running smoothly.  She introduced a variety of acts and shared a bit of her own humor with the crowd.

The sign language club started off the programs by signing the Pledge of Alliegence along with Lee Greenwood's music.  The Hott Heels Tap Dance Troupe started their own Zoot Suit Riot.  The line dance classes made everyone want to get out of their chairs and dance.  This Silver Chords shared their harmonies and the Tai Chi/ Qi Gong class just made everyone say "wow."

As director of the Center, I was proud of everyone who came up on stage and participated.  It takes a lot of courage to share what you're learning with strangers, and everyone did a great job with it!

Eater Outers @ Carlito's Cafe

Thanks to Carlito's Cafe for inviting us to their restaurant and giving us all a discount.  There were no complaints from the patrons as we were brought free chips, tortillas, salsa and queso for the pre-meal fill up.

The manager was kind enough to join us for the meal in a side room that they reserved just for our party.  She was congenial to all attendees and we enjoyed her company.  I don't know about everyone else, but I felt pretty important.

Speaking of feeling important, I've gotten myself a reputation for arriving late to the Eater Outer meals and last night was no exception.  However, while I'm usually waiting to get my meal long after everyone else has eaten their last bite, my burrito came out only minutes after my neighbors.  How cool was that??!!!

Eater Outers happens monthly on the second Tuesday, and it's become one of my favorite hang out times with R.A.C. attendees.  I can't wait to see where were going next month!

New Bike

Thanks to the generosity of RAC patrons, we have just purchased a new stationary bike for our center.  It was delivered this afternoon to our craft room, and I took the opportunity to try it out.

This bike is silent.  I guess I'm just a throwback from the days when stationary bikes and tredmills made so much noise that you couldn't hear what was being said on the TV.  When you turn on the cable in our craft room, you'll be able to hear every word while you exercise.

The bike has a variety of settings that let you choose the level of workout you want.  It keeps time and can even tell you your pulse.  The seat is large and cushoned with a back rest that actually makes riding a stationary bike comfortable. Go figure.

It's worth trying out if you're in the neighborhood!

State Capitol

Well, the bus went to the OK State Capitol this morning and had a tour of the building.  Upon returning, patrons said they were impressed by the arcitecture and truely enjoyed the trip...except for the heat.  Seeing how our New Bus, "Big Rob," was in the shop, they took the old bus that has a less than adequate airconditioner.

But take heart, everyone!  The new bus will be back on track tomorrow!  The dent is gone and the bus will look and feel as good as when it first came off the showroom floor (especially compared to the Old Bus).  104 degrees won't even phase the passengers headed to the Simpson's Old Time Museum in Enid next week.

Well, see you all tomorrow for Beef and Noodles!!

Learning Sign Language

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Well, we don’t have any “Old Dogs” at the Robertson Activity Center, but we are all way out of high school, and the learning just never quits. Every Thursday morning at 10:00 am, the RAC Sign Language Club puts their fingers in motion, and they are kind enough to let me, the RAC director, join in.

We are learning to sign the Pledge of Allegiance and each week it is incredible to watch how everyone in the group is getting better. Weekly spelling tests are making the alphabet easier and teaching me that I should probably not always rely on spell check. The seniors have the advantage over me there.

Laughter seems to be the key ingredient in sticking with anything long enough to learn it, and this club has plenty of laughter to go around. We enjoy working together and taking our time to learn a new word or phrase.

As of yet, we do not have any def members in our little club. We also have a serious lack of signing experts. What we do have is a lot of enthusiasm and a bunch of picture books to help us over the stumbling blocks. Anyone is welcome to come and join us.

Tap Dance

Are you feeling footloose and fancy free?? Well, we can help you out with that. Come on down to the Robertson Activity Center Tap Classes.

Monday evenings at 6:30 pm we have an open class for all ages and abilities. Wednesdays at 1:00pm, we have a class for adults 55 and older. We’ll be glad to teach you to shuffle, flap, perididle, and time step. Plus, you can’t beat the price. Absolutely FREE.

The members of these tap classes have taken on the name of Hott Heels. You can see them perform this summer at the RAC Ice Cream Social on Aug. 19th. They are working on some new numbers to show off their skills. Though performing is not a requirement, everyone seems enthusiastic about having their friends and family witness all they’ve accomplished.

Any new participants will be welcomed with open arms. Group membership ranges in age from 20 something to 80 something and skill or previous dance experience are not necessary.

Give Back with Mobile Meals

For 35 years, individuals have been volunteering with the Mobile Meals organization. Drivers can volunteer their services once a month, twice a month, or even weekly, and the benefits are felt everyday.

Park Board Member Lois Cain, got to experience the joy of helping out fellow Yukon residents by driving a route to deliver meals to homebound individuals. Cain loaded up her minivan around 10:30 am and hit the streets. After ringing a dozen doorbells throughout Yukon, Cain said, “I enjoy meeting new people and it was a great way to make someone’s day a little brighter.”

Each route has between ten and fifteen recipients that gratefully accept meals Monday through Friday. For the small cost of $1.50 per day, the senior and disabled population in Yukon can have healthy, hot meals come to their front door.

Many of the recipients are actually sponsored through the kindness of community members or organizations. Churches often donate money or food to keep the program going strong. Individuals sponsor the program through the “$1 a Day Feeds the Way” program. Everyone has the opportunity to make the world a little better through giving to others. Find your opportunity by calling Mobile Meals at 350-5900.

Welcome

The Robertson Activity Center in Yukon, OK is a great place for adults over age 55 to have a good time.  We keep the place hopping with activities to suit just about anyone.  From games and socializing, to hobbies and dance, we try to make it all available at little or no cost to the Yukon Residents.

Everytime there's a hoilday, you can be sure we'll be throwing a party to celebrate.  We'll be celebrating the heat of an Oklahoma summer on August 19th with our Annual Ice Cream Social.  All Yukon residents over age 55 are welcome to come and enjoy free ice cream and entertainment.  The Gospel Guitar Guys will be playing for the 3rd year in a row, and their variety of music stretches from gospel, to rock, to country.

At the Ice Cream Social, we'll also have some of our performace groups give a display of their skills.  Everyone from the Sign Language Club to the Tai Chi class will show what they can do.  We're excited for new people to see what classes we have to offer and come out and join the fun.
