Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Well, we don’t have any “Old Dogs” at the Robertson Activity Center, but we are all way out of high school, and the learning just never quits. Every Thursday morning at 10:00 am, the RAC Sign Language Club puts their fingers in motion, and they are kind enough to let me, the RAC director, join in.
We are learning to sign the Pledge of Allegiance and each week it is incredible to watch how everyone in the group is getting better. Weekly spelling tests are making the alphabet easier and teaching me that I should probably not always rely on spell check. The seniors have the advantage over me there.
Laughter seems to be the key ingredient in sticking with anything long enough to learn it, and this club has plenty of laughter to go around. We enjoy working together and taking our time to learn a new word or phrase.
As of yet, we do not have any def members in our little club. We also have a serious lack of signing experts. What we do have is a lot of enthusiasm and a bunch of picture books to help us over the stumbling blocks. Anyone is welcome to come and join us.
